POS
Square for Restaurants
Square for Restaurants is a cloud-based restaurant EPOS and payments product for the UK market. It covers orders, menus, tables, bills, card payments, kitchen tickets, reporting and online ordering. Square also sells retail, website, invoicing, loyalty, marketing and staff products, which are separate services and should not be treated as included restaurant functions.
Independent perspective
Our review
Square offers a straightforward route into POS for smaller hospitality outlets. Its accessible plans, hardware options and lack of a recorded minimum term make testing easier than with a large installation project. Public feedback repeatedly values quick setup and simple everyday use. We see the strongest fit where a hotel’s bar or restaurant operates largely as a separate outlet.
Our main reservation for hotels is room-charge posting. A supported PMS connection was not established in the reviewed material, so operators should not assume food and beverage sales will appear automatically on guest bills. Processing charges also need modelling at the outlet’s expected turnover. The large public review corpus covers many types of business; it is not all evidence of hotel use.
We would test a shift’s orders, refunds and reconciliation, then calculate the complete processing and hardware cost. If rooms and the outlet remain separate, decide how staff will handle guest charges and how finance will bring the totals together.
Our verdict
We recommend considering Square for small outlets that value quick setup and accept a separate settlement process. It is less suited to hotels requiring a proven room-billing workflow or complex connected operations. Ease of use is a real advantage, but the payment economics and accounting process still matter.
The assessment
What stands out
Strengths
Quick to start and easy to understand. The interface and joined-up payment setup can suit smaller operators moving from a basic till or separate card terminal.
Combines service and payments. Staff can take orders and payments at the counter, table or on supported handheld devices.
Offers a practical entry level. A free software tier is available, with transaction charges, while Plus adds more restaurant controls.
Can grow through add-ons. Kitchen displays, online ordering, loyalty, marketing, staff tools and selected third-party connections can extend the core system.
Worth knowing
The free, Plus and Premium packages differ. Kitchen display, kiosk, advanced inventory, loyalty, marketing and staff functions can carry separate subscriptions, so compare the complete setup rather than the headline monthly price.
Square processes the payments within the service and publishes separate charges for in-person, online and manually entered transactions. Offline payment acceptance has conditions and limits, so it should not be treated as a complete substitute for reliable internet.
Product-specific reviews are positive about usability and speed. Customer service and value score lower than ease of use, and fuller-service restaurants should test detailed courses, modifiers, stock control, reporting and integrations against real service scenarios.
