PMS
Mews
Mews is a cloud-native hospitality platform centred on its property management system. It combines reservations, front desk operations, housekeeping, guest self-service and mandatory embedded payments, with channel management and a large integration marketplace. Package choice determines the depth of business intelligence, APIs and marketplace access.
Independent perspective
Our review
Mews PMS: an EHM review
Effective Hospitality Management (EHM) is a Mews deployment partner. This review is based on our direct experience installing, configuring and supporting Mews PMS across independent hotels, inns, venues, multi-site groups and pre-opening properties in the UK and Europe. Mews did not commission, fund or review it, and the views expressed are our own.
Mews has become one of the most talked-about property management systems in independent hospitality, and for good reason. Having implemented it across a wide range of properties, we can say with confidence that the core software is strong. It is fast, cloud-based and highly configurable, and it connects to a large marketplace of revenue management, accounting, housekeeping, door lock and guest messaging tools. Front office teams pick up reservations and guest handling quickly, often managing the system independently within weeks. Restrictions let a property build, connect channels and test before opening sales. When it is set up well, Mews removes a great deal of manual administration and gives operators far better control over rates, packages, upselling and reporting. Almost every operator we have worked with rates the product itself highly.
Mews is also investing heavily in AI messaging and automation across the reservation journey. These tools will add real value, handling routine guest communication and reducing manual work at the front desk. As with any new capability, they come with a learning curve. Operators should allow time to set them up properly and refine them, rather than expecting them to run perfectly from day one.
Finance is the area that most rewards careful planning. Mews gives hotels a great deal of control over deposits, prepayments, VAT and revenue categories. That control means the setup must reflect exactly how each property's accountant wants to report. Which accounting category a product sits in decides whether it counts as room revenue. Payment provider accounts are managed by Mews, so finance teams work from the payout report rather than a direct view of the account. VAT on non-reservation deposits, which matters for events, is currently only available through a beta programme. Our advice is to involve your finance team early, treat finance sign-off as a condition of go-live, and test a live posting to your accounting system before you open.
Integrated payments are one of Mews' real advantages, bringing guest payments, deposits and OTA virtual cards into one place. They reward good training. Teams need to understand when virtual cards can be charged, how bill ownership affects which payment methods appear, and that the Mews Payments balance sets the limit for refunds. When comparing costs, look closely at card processing and tokenisation fees as well as the monthly subscription. For some properties, payments rather than platform fees decide whether Mews costs more or less than their current setup.
Channel connections to the major booking sites work reliably once they are mapped correctly. Mapping is unforgiving, though. An unmapped or mismatched rate can bring bookings in on the wrong price or cancellation terms, and in the worst cases can charge guests earlier than intended. Rates and room types added later need creating in the channel extranet first and mapping in Mews afterwards. Every rate, room type and policy should be tested before trading live, and someone should check channel error notifications daily. Pricing for children and extra guests needs particular care, because Mews calculates it from occupancy settings rather than guest age alone.
Mews is sold in tiers, and some features depend on the package you choose. Embedding the booking engine widget directly on your website is one example that has caught out properties on lower tiers. Confirm in writing that every feature you need is included before signing. The same applies to integrations: check the certification status and licensing of each one at contract stage, as some can only be fully tested once the property is live. If you rely on a revenue management system, check early that future-dated extras, taxes and booking changes flow through to your forecasts correctly.
A number of operational requirements are not handled natively and need planning. The Mews booking engine is relatively basic, with limited configuration options. Properties that need specific products available only with certain rooms or rates will usually need a third-party booking engine or integration. Minimum advance booking rules work in whole days rather than hours. A property that wants to stop same-day bookings at a set time, such as 4pm, has to close availability manually every day. Mews has no native way to generate room or door access codes, so properties using keypad or code-based entry will need a third-party access integration. Extra beds added as products do not change room occupancy, and extras cannot carry ordering cut-offs. Each of these has a workable solution, but some add cost or remove upsell opportunities, so they are best designed in from the start.
Events-led properties will usually rely on a third-party events platform, and should agree which system holds the master record and test the sync in both directions. Standard reporting covers most needs, although product-level operational detail often needs exporting and sorting outside Mews.
Once properties move from deployment into Mews' standard support model, the experience becomes more self-service. Some operators have told us they found it harder to get timely answers on billing, contract and account questions after handover, and weekend and bank holiday cover is limited. For a small independent hotel, even a short delay can mean lost bookings. Confirm your named contacts and escalation route in writing, and decide early whether you want ongoing specialist support after go-live.
Finally, adoption depends on ownership and a willingness to think differently. Mews structures its data very differently from most traditional property management systems. For teams switching from another platform, the biggest adjustment is often not the screens but relearning how reservations, products, bills and payments flow through the system. The properties that thrive on Mews accept this early. They complete Mews University training before go-live and practise in a demo environment refreshed from their live configuration. They also make operational decisions early and give one person clear responsibility for the system.
Our verdict
Mews PMS is a modern platform that can transform how an independent hotel operates, and we continue to recommend it where the fit is right. It is not a system to rush into. Operators who confirm package features and total cost upfront, check which requirements need third-party support, plan finance and training carefully, and test payments and channel connections thoroughly will get the best from it. Those who treat go-live as the finish line rather than the starting point are the ones most likely to be disappointed.
The assessment
What stands out
Strengths
Strong automation around stays and payments. Mews can automate payment rules, online check-in, guest communications and routine front desk work when the property adopts the intended processes.
Broad connection options. The supplier publishes more than 1,000 marketplace integrations on its Enterprise package, alongside an open API and direct channel connections.
Generally easy for teams to learn. Ease of use, modern workflows and quicker onboarding recur in current public reviews.
Suitable for independent hotels and groups. Multi-property controls are available, although current reviewers still ask for deeper central group functionality.
Worth knowing
Mews Payments is embedded in the platform and is not an optional third-party payment module. Hotels should compare card processing, tokenisation, refunds and payout reconciliation as part of the total cost.
The package matters. Business intelligence, full API access and unlimited marketplace access sit in the Enterprise package, while lower tiers have narrower reporting and connection allowances.
Public reviews are strong overall. Recurring cautions include the initial configuration effort, changes to screens after updates, requests for more flexible reporting and further development of central multi-property controls.
Operational fit
Where it fits
- Manage reservations, arrivals, departures, housekeeping and guest accounts in one cloud platform.
- Automate deposits, card charging and payment reconciliation through Mews Payments.
- Offer online check-in, guest self-service and upselling before arrival.
- Connect distribution, POS, revenue, finance and guest systems through the marketplace or APIs.
- Apply shared controls across several properties where the selected package supports them.
Best suited for
Vendor explicitly markets to small and independent hotels, hotel groups, hostels and serviced apartments, with resort customer evidence. Payments and workflow change remain implementation considerations.
May not suit
Properties that cannot use Mews Payments, require substantial offline PMS operation, depend on an unsupported legacy integration, or need highly specialised group reporting and central controls without first confirming the relevant package and capability.

What this assessment is based on
Mews states an average score of 4.6 out of 5 across nearly 4,500 reviews on several platforms. Individual platform snapshots are recorded separately rather than treating this supplier total as one product score.
View source ↗Mews publishes tiered packages. PMS, booking engine, guest portal, automated payments and core reporting are included from Essentials, while advanced business intelligence, full APIs and unlimited marketplace access sit in Enterprise.
View source ↗Mews sells upgrades, early arrival/late departure, parking and additional bookable spaces through its guest journey.
View source ↗Editorial workflow-quality assessment: 4/5 for Reporting and analysis. The recorded reviews identify a specific operational strength. Based on EHM published assessment. This is not the supplier's overall star score. Implementation effort and commercial terms are assessed separately.
5/5 for everyday core PMS operation, based on EHM's published account of deploying and supporting Mews across independent hotels and groups: strong core software and front-office teams handling reservations independently within weeks. Package restrictions, implementation training and specialist workflows are assessed separately. This rating does not apply to the new RMS or Channel Manager modules.
4/5 editorial workflow-quality rating. Public reviews and EHM experience support useful integrations and a broad marketplace. A third-party access-code integration requirement is a separate scope limitation, not a weakness of the marketplace itself. Original source dates and confidence retained.
